I'm glad I read this book.

I like the chapter on the relative learning difficulty of many of the most popular current languages. This book adds to what I gained from another language comparison book.

A very nice structure for learning the basics of a language in a short time interval.

I like Frederick Dodson's approach, because it actually lays out a plan to acquire an 800 key word vocabulary in about 40 hours of study. You will need to get some resources for your target language. I recommend native speaker audio to learn pronunciation. A simplified grammar will also be useful for understanding basic sentence structure and verb morphology. I also like that the goal of this plan is not fluency, but, rather, basic facility. A reasonable goal, with a road map.

Does NOT include the 800 words it promises, which is the entire premise of the book!?!

The whole premise of this book is learning the most common 800 words/phrases in your target language in 5 days. That's memorizing 160 words a day, which is ridiculous. The author says you have to take a week off work and study 8 hours a day for 5 days. Even in that case, it's a huge reach to memorize that much. (He says not to bother with grammar, so obviously this book does NOT teach you to "learn a language" in 5 days.)In any case, I thought I would just use his list of most commonly used words at my own pace to supplement my actual language learning. However, he doesn't even include the 800 words which are the entire basis of his method!!! I counted a total of 554 words. The lists are split into 4 sections:1. The 100 most important words (there were only 99)2. The 200 most important phrases (there were only 122)3. The 400 next most important words (there were only 242)4. The 100 most important business words (there were only 91)(And to top it off, some of the words he included in one list were already listed in a previous list, so there are some useless repeating words, making the total list of words even shorter than i mentioned above.)This was a meticulous count i did on my Kindle. Maybe the print book has the complete lists? Maybe the Kindle book was not edited properly. I tried to contact the author for the complete list, but there is no contact information for him online (his website removed his contact information).I read the book on Kindle Unlimited, so it wasn't extra money I spent, but the author still gets paid for a book promising something it doesn't deliver. It's a shame because one of his other books is actually one of my very favorite books of all time!
