She's wanted a new chess set for years and this was affordable plus it had the table hockey game for her partner to play. She plans to use that to sweetalk him into learning to play chess, lol. We'll see is if works.

Overall this feels like a cheap setup, but it's still fun nonetheless! The wood is very lightweight & could've been more intelligently designed. For starters the clasp to open & close is not opposite the hinges but this one was placed on the side of it. I go to open it the wrong way every time. I also don't like that the hockey goals leave an opening for the pucks to fall out whenever you pick it up. They do fall out in our case. I left the chess pieces in their plastic bags, I guess I'll have to grab another bag for the pucks too.The hockey instructions are not clear whatsoever. Are you supposed to take turns? I don't know really so what we chose to do was each take 5 pucks, set a 10 minute timer & have a free for all where whoever had the most pucks at the end lost. It was very fun because you could be way up or way down at different points in the game. The chess game is obviously pretty straightforward.All in all it's not a bad starter kit. I appreciate that it's fairly self contained so you have the option to travel with it as well.

My husband recently started teaching our 6 year old granddaughter how to play chess. She is really enjoying it, so we wanted to get her a nice set for Christmas.Both the board and playing pieces are made of solid wood that appears to be pine. The white pieces are unstained with a clear finish and the opponent pieces are stained a medium brown. Each piece has felt on the bottom so it moves across the board smoothly and won't scratch the playing surface. I wish some of the pieces were more distinctively shaped. Some are a little similar which might be confusing for a beginner.The base is a hinged case that opens up to store the pieces. The wood is smoothly finished with no rough areas. The corners are sharp, but this shouldn't be an issue at her age.The board graphics are clearly printed onto the top of the wood case and are a nice dark black. There's a hockey puck game inside and those graphics in red and black are also clearly printed. There are instructions for playing the hockey game, but none for chess. I think most young players have mentor to teach and guide them, and chess instructions are readily available online.There was a distinctive pine wood smell when opening the package, but not overwhelming. The smell is still faintly there, but has mostly dissipated since being out of the packaging.The description describes this as portable, but at 11 by 11.75 by 2 inches, it's not something you could tuck into a backpack. However, I would say that at 1 lb 13.5 oz (board and pieces), it's light enough to to take to a friend's home or a holiday gathering. There are two ziplock bags included to hold the chess pieces that are stored inside the case. The simple latch securely holds the case closed.While this chess set is not heirloom quality, I think it's a wonderful starter set and a great value at $9.99. I'm pleasantly surprised at how nice this set is at this price point.As a side note, this NEROSUN Foldable Chess Set is made in China.

My kids (9 and 7) loved the puck game, but it can get a bit out of hand because the board is smallish and it’s basically who can shoot their pucks faster than the other. Make sure there is some parental supervision. They are not really playing chess at the moment so I can only evaluate the chess part based upon appearance. The pieces could be more distinctive, and they do NOT look like the quality pieces shown in the second photo (false advertising there) and some of the supporting photos. The pieces do have felt on the bottom for better movement and less wear. I like the fact that the item is self-contained and stores and travels easily. My main reason for the lower rating is the quality for the price, as there were several defects in the game I received (see photos). This item is listed at $20, but I wouldn’t pay more than $14 after seeing it.

This chess set has a lot going for it. It's a nice size: slightly smaller than a full-sized chessboard, but not tiny. The ranks and files are labeled on all four sides of board, which is a helpful touch. It's entirely made of wood, with a cute little latch holding it closed. All the pieces can be stored comfortably inside. However, while it is a very portable set, I wouldn't quite call it a travel set, since the pieces aren't magnetized. No way you could play this in a car or anything like that. And there's no handle for carrying.The pieces are pretty nice, but not perfect. They aren't a Staunton set or any other specific style, but a slightly simplified version of the pieces. And while the board itself is nice and smooth, the felt-type material on the bottom of the pieces isn't a bit stiff and scratchy, preventing the pieces from having a good gliding action. That's a minor issue though.The wooden pucks for the second game are nice quality, and they do move really smoothly. The launching bands have good action, and everything feels slick and well designed on that side of the set.Overall, it's really great as a daily chessboard, and you can easily take it with you wherever you go. The second game is a fun bonus too. Definitely recommended.

The kids love the slingshot game! But this was perfect to give the kids some classic game options that I grew up with.

My kids and family have enjoyed this game and had many hours of use while traveling over the holidays. Instead of looking at screens, they took turns playing this game, and it was awesome. The games are well made, and I love that it is easy to transport! Highly recommend!

The quality is decent enough to use regularly and have out for guests, but isn't a high-end set by any means. The enclosed box is a nice feature for travel, or really in most likely cases just to keep everything together at home when not in use.Overall for the two games the price is pretty decent. There are other similar options out there, but I think this is generally a good find. I recommend it.
