Q: I am trying to decide between standard and wide for this shoe. how roomy is the Standard width?

Unless your foot is very wide, I think the standard width is fine. The shoe is shaped in a half-circle at the front which leaves room for the toes to spread. Pointed, this would not be a good choice.

Q: As of May 2018, have the issues with too-short velcro straps and overly large tongues been fixed? Many earlier reviews complain of these problems.

Just bought and returned. Flaw has not been changed. Strap too short to loop thru to fasten. Tongue too padded and too long.

Q: Can these be run through a washing machine?

I've worn these 577's (previously 575) for decades for work as a dental hygienist. I wear them until they get older looking when the become my regular shoes until they get worn and then they become my garden shoes. So I've got lots of pairs around. I regularly wash them with regular detergent & Oxyclean. Separate the insoles and pull the tongue to the outside for better cleaning. DON'T USE BLEACH SINCE IT WILL YELLOW THE RUBBER. Then I stuff them with newspaper to keep their shape while air drying. A touch of cream shoe polish whitens the cut edges of the leather and they look and feel brand new. I do agree the velcro straps are now toooo short.

Q: Do the insoles come out?

Yes. All new balance shoes have removable insoles. But must tell you, this particular shoe runs much narrower than ones I purchased directly from the manufacturer.
