Working with brilliantly colored beads and plated copper the young men and women of Zakale Creations Self Help Group find a sustainable income and a path out of the Nairobi slums. Electroplated, the pendants and wire in the jewelry are handmade of copper and brass. Started in 2002 by John Mucheru Kangaroo. John grew up in the slums of Kiamaiko, Kenya. His talent as a fashion designer enabled him to work his way out where he eventually worked for African heritage, which is one of the biggest hand craft companies in Kenya. John wanted to help other young people out of the slums and Zakale Creations was the result. Zakale Creation is an ethical and environmentally friendly project where youth make hand crafts using recycled and natural material. The project currently supports 30 youth directly and another 40 indirectly. Ten have left the project to create similar projects in other slums in Kenya. In addition to training young people in hand craft skills Zakale supports community initiatives to encourage women and children and stop the spread of HIV as well as supporting orphanages and the environment. When you buy a Zakale Creation craft you are helping change the lives of youth in the slums of Nairobi Kenya
