Make a fire using flint and steel with Zombie Tinder's Pioneer Char Tin. The Pioneer Char Tin is perfect for the advanced flint and steel master as well as the novice with a desire to learn the art of flint and steel. The custom made, hand-forged striker is tempered perfectly to throw the maximum amount of sparks while sitting comfortably within your grasp. Our high-carbon steel striker will produce sparks for nearly a lifetime, even with frequent use. We use the highest quality flint rock available. This is the same quality of flint that was used by Native American tribes to fashion knives and arrow heads hundreds of years ago. Our flint rock is **EXTREMELY** sharp, so please take caution while using it. However, this extreme sharpness is needed to scrape the steel properly in order to generate the maximum amount of sparks. The char we use is of the highest, premium quality. We use a blend of natural oil and ginned cotton to produce a char that will take even the weakest sparks. Then, it will smolder slow and VERY hot to lend more time to get that tinder bundle ablaze. We also include about 6 feet of natural jute twine to use as tinder. Just separate out the fibers and form into what would resemble a birds nest for a good source of tinder. The 3 ounce push-top tin can be reused to make more char, time and time again. We also include a tough and durable RANGER band to insure the tin remains closed.

Don't waste your time or money
Don't write many reviews of products here with the lower numbers. Generally, everything I have bought off of Amazon has been fairly priced and a quality product. That is until now. Now I don't hold no truck with the idea of a primitive fire kit. This one contains a C striker, a piece of flint, a piece of char, and prepared jute twine, and a Char tin box. All of these items are certainly helpful and can be life-saving under the proper mal conditions. My beef is with the price. They are charging $25 for this kit and everything in it looks like it was made for boy scouts. Don't get me wrong the striker works, the twine is separated and ready to be used as tinder, the char is a teeny weeny little piece that would be good for one fire. The tin itself can be used to make your own char which is not a very difficult process, but if they are going to send out a kit that is clearly designed for the beginner it would help if directions were included for the beginner to follow. It's not a difficult process but it is a specific process. The piece of flint is no where near as big as the picture. And while I am at it, none of the kit I got looks anything like the picture they use. The "ranger band" that I received was about 1/2" wide. So I thought I would return it. Well it turns out that $6 is taken off the top for a return. So now I am down to $19.94, that and postage and I figured I might as well keep it. I bought this kit due to their inclusion of it in a Battlebox Mission 16, but the kit I got is NOTHING like the kit they gave to Battle Box. Nope you would be much better off to buy this kit piecemeal. BTW, the directions to make char area: Get an Altoid tin or something like it, take an old 100% cotton t shirt and cut the shirt into 3" x 3" squares. Place the squares in the tin, and this is very important DO NOT OPEN THE TIN AGAIN UNTIL THE FIRE IS OUT. When you make an open fire place the tin on the inner part of the outside edge of the fire. Let it sit there for at least 2-2.5 hrs. The key here is that fire needs two elements to burn, heat and oxygen. By keeping the lid closed you don't allow any of the material to actually burn. The material is slowly turned to char. At the end of the time move the box out of the fire, but do not open it. Let it completely cool BEFORE you open it. So my suggestion is pass on the tin. A person can put together their own char tin for less money and a lot more fun. For those of you wondering what a ranger band is, it is a piece of bicycle innertube cut in a small piece and used as a device to hold things together or to tether pieces to your rucksack.

Make fire like great grandpa
Hard to beat a ferrocerium or firesteel or misch rod but the assembled kit from Zombie Tinder is impressive and functional (I got sparks right off using either of two striking flints enclosed.Other members of my sar team took turns with it and pictures (replaces post-it notes in the field) to remind them to enclose with "gift" lists. Originally purchased to help with demonstrations of historical fire making methods/equipment but I may elevate it to "possibles" bag for searchers as its quite lightweight and small or give members alternatives to consider.

This is great!I have to say that the one I ordered came flawed and it was immediately replaced with one of the finest steels I've used and a personal note. I would, and already have, recommend Zombie Tinder to people in the market. Thank you, ZT.

Good three finger piece of steel, but a tiny (thumb size) piece of flint. Good char cloth too.
