Outstanding explanation how science and philosophy can and should be used together to make life more meaningful
The primary thesis of this book is that, in order for one to live a meaningful life in the broadest and best sense, one must use the best of science and the best of philosophy in order to understand the true nature of the world and how it matters to human well-being. Now, although my initial assessment of this book did not see it as such, my final assessment is that this is an excellent book with much valuable insight as to how humans ought to live as they try to make the most of their opportunities in this difficult world. I am particularly pleased with the author's approach that combines both science and philosophy as complimentary enterprises that, together, allow one to understand in the best way, what is true and valuable in living life today.

What do science and philosophy have to say about living a meaningful life?
This is one of my favorite books! I bought it when it first came out and have re-read it several times since. It's full of practical advice, interesting philosophical concepts, and relevant scientific studies. I think it's intended to be a self help book for people who hate self help books and it never gets preachy or heavy handed. Whenever I get in a conversation with someone about philosophical concepts like morality, epistemology, or free will this is the first thing I grab off my shelf to quickly brush up on the topic. It presents empirical facts from science that are relevant to philosophical reflection on human values. While it doesn't go in depth on any given area, the range of topics is very impressive and each section makes the most out of the brief space allotted with every sentence adding substantially to the chapter. The number of passages I have underlined in my copy is almost comical, but there's a lot of great stuff here. There is no fluff or filler in this book. It's a very nice blend of philosophy and science with the aim to aid each reader in their own quest for meaning and purpose. Every time I read it I get more out of it. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

love, friendship
This is the first book I have read by Professor Pigliucci, although I have followed his blog "How To Be A Stoic". This book was all I hoped it to be, Massimo lays out how to live a life informed by science and philosophy or sci-phi as he calls it, covering such subjects as ethics, love, friendship, politics and more. He writes in a friendly and engaging manner and I happily finished the book in one day. The book is mostly written for a layman like myself and for those of you more academically inclined you may find little new material. I look forward to reading Massimo's up coming book on stoicism.

Sci-Phi
Sci-phi. One of the better books I have read. The book allowed me to put the last piece in a puzzle that I have been working on for a long time. It was a case of being at the right place at the right time.

Great Answers
I really enjoyed this book and the writing, which was clear and informal. Was amused by the use and re-use of the word "whopping"! But all-in-all Pigliucci did a terrific job answering Aristotle.

A thoughtful and well-written book
You may not agree with all the conclusions the author reaches--particularly regarding religion--but his reasoning and writing style are highlights of the book.

Avuncular
What I liked most about the book is the range and scope. It was cogent and relevant. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in philosophy and science, but who is relatively a novice. Some who already know a fair amount about philosophy and science may find the style pedantic and verbose. I imagine the author as very avuncular, but I listen to his podcasts.

Enjoyable and approachable read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. An important lesson can be learnt by those of us who thought that philosophy should be put aside in the modern age. The author makes a good case that science, although useful and necessary to understand the world we live in by providing provisional conclusions, is not sufficient to live meaningful life and sometimes can even have a word in scientific matters. In contrast Pigliucci believes that science and philosophy can unite their forces a create something he calls sci-phi in delivering fundamental answers to issues ranging from ethics and politics to the more general art of living. If you want to know how, then you should read this book! The style of the book informal and approachable making it easy to digest the slightly more difficult topics.

Excellent and enlightening
The sci-phi aspect of this book is absolutely amazing. To identify the link between science and philosophy and how they intertwine with such ease, is an astounding accomplishment. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book which has lead me into an interest in ethics.
